Board Games
I have liked board games since childhood. I always played them with my siblings and my friends. I think board games bring people together to spend quality time. It’s a great way to socialize and learn something.
Some games can teach you how to compete friendly or collaborate in problem-solving. Other games can sharpen your strategic and logical thinking. Also, board games often evoke nostalgia, reminding me of simpler times when screens didn’t mediate human interaction.
Board games can be a great way to reduce stress and improve mental health. Engaging in a game can provide a mental break, allowing players to focus on the task and enjoy time with others.

Backgammon
My favorite board game is Backgammon. The game achieved significant global popularity in the late 20th century. Early versions of backgammon are considered some of the most ancient games known and could date back to around 3000 BC. The ancient Romans engaged in a game called Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum, one of backgammon’s historical precursors.
The first time I tried this game was back in 2019 in Norway. Backgammon is very popular there. Almost every pub has it in the bar. The locals once taught me how to play, and it became my favorite game. I enjoy the unpredictability of the dice, which makes every game different. The simple rules make it easy to learn. The dice roll gives the part of the luck, but the game also offers many chances to improve strategy and tactics.
The Board Games Industry
There are over 100,000 board games worldwide. As of 2022, the global board games market was valued at $11.88 billion, and revenue generated was $8 billion for the same year. The board games industry is growing steadily. Many different games are available, so everyone can find something they like.
The priciest board game ever produced is a custom-made version of Monopoly. This lavish edition, costing over $2 million, is crafted from 18-karat gold and adorned with precious jewels. This extravagant version underscores Monopoly’s lasting charm and iconic status.
Popular Board Games
Chess is considered the most popular board game ever. Over 3 million Chess sets are sold each year in the United States. Though we don’t have exact sales numbers from the past, chess is popular worldwide and is often sold by checkers because they use the same board.
For modern board games, Monopoly and Scrabble are the top favorites. Monopoly has sold 275 million copies, and Scrabble has sold over 150 million copies so far. The success of a board game often depends on how much it relies on skill or luck. Games that need more skill are usually better for adults, while kids often enjoy luck-based games. Despite this, both types of games can still be very popular.
The Board Games in Different Cultures
Different cultures have developed their unique board games, such as the Chinese game “G”o, the Indian game “Chaturanga” (a precursor to Chess), and ancient African games like “Mancala.” While these games are famous globally, their popularity tends to be strongest in their regions of origin.
Nevertheless, people from various parts of the world enjoy playing these games. So, the next time you seek an activity, consider reaching for a board game. You might gain new knowledge or uncover a latent talent.
